Future Travels – Helsinki
This future travel is dedicated to Helsinki, Finland. A beautiful city surrounded by water, its a great weekend visit any time of year. My visit was cancelled due to the Covid restrictions, but here’s what my trip would have looked like…
Helsinki Central Station
Whether you arrive by train, plane or ferry, Helsinki Central Station is a destination in itself, with its beautiful art nouveau architecture including the famous lantern carriers.

Coffee
The Finnish are avid coffee drinkers – start with a coffee by the water at Johan and Nystrom – Kanavaranta (and probably an open sandwich and pastry too!).

Art Museums + Islands
There plenty of art museums to see in Helsinki, including The Museum of Contemporary Art / Kisama, and The Design Museum. The Didrichsen Art Museum (pictured), is the highlight – set by the sea on Kuusisaari Island and with sculpture garden (British artist Henry Moore featured above).
You can continue exploring Helsinki’s island with a visit to Seurasaari Island to see it’s nature – with tame birds! – and the Seurasaari Open Air Museum, including the beautiful Karuna Church (pictured below).
Churches
If you need a little peace and reflection in Helsinki city, make a visit to Helsinki’s striking churches, including Temppeliaukio Church – known as the ‘rock church’ (pictured), Kamppi Chapel, known as the chapel of silence, and the elegant Helsinki Cathedral – a focal point of Helsinki’s skyline.

Allas Sea Pool
Day or night, have a swim in the outdoor and heated Allas Sea Pool right on Helsinki’s harbour front. Also enjoy their sauna and spa facilities

Stay
Check in at the gorgeous Yard Hostel. Basically next door is the classic restaurant Kosmos, serving Finnish food for over 100 years.
