Krakow Food – Kazimierz

Kazimierz, Krakow’s historic Jewish Quarter, has seen a revival of its Jewish historical sites and contemporary Jewish community since fall of communism. It is also become a popular bohemian neighbourhood full of great places to eat and cool bars. Here are my favorites…

Ranny Ptaszek

All the plants (picture is my own).

A petite café with a great coffee and brunch menu. I would recommend the shakshouka – includes a choice of feta or vegan sausage and comes with a variety of sides, flat bread, and excellent hummus (featured picture).

Cheder

Warm flatbread with hummus, olives and fired aubergine (picture is my own).

A beautiful space serving as a Jewish cultural centre and café, complete with library and a varied menu. I would recommend the mezze for a light lunch and their delicious iced cardamom coffee.

Hamsa

Small ‘pick your own’ mezze selection (picture is my own).

Excellent restaurant with a spoilt for choice selection of Israeli food – including pick your own mezze sets and breakfast buffet. They cater to vegans and lactose /gluten intolerances. During summer make sure to enjoy their courtyard ala Tel Aviv!

Zalewajka Restauracja

Veal dumplings with mushroom cream sauce (left) and potato pancakes with wild boar stew (right). Picture is my own.

A charming restaurant serving fantastic Polish food, including the best dumplings I’ve ever had! It was genuinely hard to not go back again (if it wasn’t for the other places I wanted to eat, I would have!). I would recommend the veal dumplings with beautifully rich mushroom cream sauce, and the potato pancakes with a hearty wild boar stew.

Starka Restaurant

Duck and pork main dishes (picture is my own).

Another fantastic Polish restaurant, serving an excellent range of hearty mains. I would recommend the plum stuffed pork and the delicious duck breast. Do not miss their vodka selection (its likely they will provide you with some anyway!)

Hevre

Hevre (picture is my own).

For the evening… Hevre is a relaxed cocktail bar in a beautiful historic building. Recommend their ‘Hugo’ cocktail – elderflower liquor, prosecco, mint and lime – delicious!

Eszeweria Bar

Can you find the mouse?

Intimate, higgledy-piggledy pub with a special, relaxed atmosphere. Perfect place to settle in with friends for drinks and long chats. Not to be missed.
