Future Travels – Uzbekistan
This future travel is dedicate to Uzbekistan. The Central Asian, ex-soviet state is an unmissable stop on the ancient Silk Road with magnificent UNESCO sites. Here are the sights I will not be missing…
Samarkand
Samarkand hosts the star attraction – the stunning Registan Central Square (featured picture), with the most beautiful Islamic architecture, along with the the Gur-e Amir Mausoleum (pictured above).
Tashkent
In the capital Tashkent, the grand and elaborate Tashkent Metro is a visit in itself – see this Guardian piece for more pictures – along with the iconic architecture of the Hotel Uzbekistan on Amira Timur Square (named after the national hero). Do not miss the domed Chorsu Bazaar, for pretty much any Uzbek food you could want.
Bukhara + Khiva
See the UNESCO cities of Bukhara – including the Kalon Minaret, the Bukhara old city, and the Ark Fortress – and ‘living museum’ of the walled city of Khiva.
Food
The traditional Uzbekistan food, including the national rice and meat dish Plov, the many dumplings and soup dishes, and the beautiful bread.
Transport
The easiets way to Uzbekistan is to fly into Tashkent and get around the main cities in Uzbekistan with ease through its high speed railway. As ever, the indispensable Man in Seat 61 provides an excellent guide to Uzbekistan train travel, as well as a guide to visiting Uzbekistan via the Silk Road from Moscow.
